A Great Day for Charity

Today, the weather was absolutely beautiful for the Chicagoland Speedway/Route 66 Raceway Easter Egg Dash. We had the largest crowd in the four year history of the event. I don't have the exact count, however it was in excess of 400 people. With the Easter Bunny in Gatorade Victory Lane and our mascot Dash roaming the grounds the kids were having a great time. At Noon, the kids had the Dash for the Easter Eggs  which took place in the infield camping ground.  We had long lines in  Gatorade Victory Lane as the kids (and the parents in many cases) had photographs taken with the Easter Bunny . Although the lines were long, we were able to get everyone through rather quickly. It was a fun day and R.A.C.E. (our charitable foundation) raised some money. Here are some images from today's activities. All the images will be linked on the Speedway website.

This Saturday, March 21st,  from 11:00a.m. 1:00 p.m., the Chicagoland Speedway/Route 66 Raceway will be hosting the Annual Easter Egg Dash. The cost is a $3 donation per child. The event is sponsored by Julie, Inc. Janet and I will be photographing the event and I, specifically, will be doing Victory Lane with the Easter Bunny. I will not be the Easter Bunny, but the photographer. Our mascot Dash will be making an appearance along with our Junior Dragsters, the Joliet Fire Dept, the Speedway Show Car and other family fun events. Come out for a good cause and get a photo in Victory Lane or with your favorite Junior Dragster or Dash or the Show Car. The early weather report is very promising with partly cloudy skies and a 50 degree temperature. It looks like it is going to be a beautiful day! Here are some images from last year's event.

Meadowdale International Raceway

Today, I visited the Raceway Woods Forest Preserve. This is the site of the old Meadowdale International Raceway. The Raceway was in existence from 1958-1969. It held Trans Am, motorcycle, kart and drag races during its existence. The Forest Preserve District and the locals have done a good job to preserve what is left of the racetrack. As I was walking along, I came across a couple who were using a metal detector. I asked if they had seen any artifacts from the track. They directed me to an area where a building used to stand. Some of the roofing, concrete floor and what appears to be a wooden foundation are in a very isolated area. Adjacent to this area, is what appears to be a gas pump like you would find at your local gas station. Here are some of the images from today's adventure.

I also submitted these to Matt Dillner's lostspeedways.com. If you want to read more about the Meadowdale International Raceway, please click here.

Today was the Championship Banquet for GLX Snocross.  There was good food and fun for all. Race Director Mike Tomczak was presented with a twenty year award for his work with GLX . He stated, even though he is retiring as Race Director he plans on being around and is looking forward to some relaxation which my include getting back on a sled himself. At the conclusion, everyone sang Happy Birthday to Hunter Henley and ate cake and ice cream. Today, was a great end to a great season. I hope to see everyone next season and good luck to all those racing at Lake Geneva next weekend.

What a beautiful day for racing at GLX Snocross at the Golf Farm.. The day started a little cool with cloudy skies. However within a very short period of time, the sun came out and it started to warm. Today, there were thirteen races per heat and after the finals there was a Mechanics Race and Staff race. The Mechanics race went off without a hitch, but there was a rough start to the Staff race as two riders fell off their sleds. The day was dominated by Nick Lorenz who won every heat and finals in which he raced. Nick is quite entertaining to watch ride as he is quite the showman. He always gives the photographers some thing extra to shoot. We really appreciate that. So congratulation go out to Nick and all our class winners and Good Luck at the National Championships in Lake Geneva next weekend. This is the final race event of this season with the Championship Banquet tomorrow, Sunday, at the Golf Farm. Here are some images from today's racing action.

I can't believe we've come to the end of the GLX Snocross season this Saturday. Due to the unseasonably warm weather in late December and early January, the season started late and we did lose one race, but the season has flown by. The ISOC Championships will be contested in Lake Geneva on March 13-15. On Sunday, March 8th at the Golf Farm, GLX will have its Championship Banquet at the Golf Farm. The sad part for the end of the season is that Race Director Mike Tomczak has announced his retirement and it is rumored that Secretary Dennis Whiton may be relocating to North Carolina. They will be missed. Here are some photos from this season.
